Nagasaki
The only town that had an open port even during the period of national seclusion. The only town where foreign cultural relics could be obtained officially. Along with Hiroshima, it experienced the atomic bombing. Nagasaki is a small port town with many faces, but it is also one of the most attractive. However, when it comes to performing arts using masks, there is not much that stands out. Most of them are kagura, a form of kagura that has been passed down from generation to generation on the island. One of these performing arts that can be seen in Nagasaki City is ” Taken-gei,”
The Spectacular Show of Foxes Dancing in the Sky
The setting is Wakamiya Inari Shrine. It is not a very large shrine, but there are as many as 70 torii gates on the grounds. Two towering bamboos stand in the precincts of a shrine. One is about 10 meters high and has a staircase called “kase” for climbing.
Then the two appeared dressed as a male and female fox. They climbed up the bamboo and performed various tricks on a 10-meter-high platform. The audience could only look up in amazement as the performers performed their tricks on the swaying bamboos without lifelines.
In fact, there are two more bamboos standing next to it, each about 5 meters long. This is for children to show off their skills, and elementary school children between the ages of five and eight can also show off their skills.
The “Taken Gei” will be held over two days. If you have a chance, please come and see for yourself.
